Understand the economic and market influences on USD/CNH, and why the exchange rate can react differently from a headline forecast.
The main drivers
Chinese and US policy expectations, offshore renminbi liquidity, cross-border flows and trade developments can influence this pair. Changes in offshore funding can affect forward rates and option prices even when spot moves little. Offshore and onshore prices are related but need not converge at an option’s particular fixing time.
The surprise matters
A published number must be compared with what the market expected. A policy decision can move the currency through the outlook for future decisions, not simply through today’s rate change.
A move in USD/CNH reflects both currencies. Compare the two economies and the reason for a rate change instead of assuming higher rates always strengthen a currency.
Connect the view to the option
The option strike, premium and time remaining determine how a forecast translates into a payoff. An expected event may already be reflected in the premium. A fall in implied volatility can offset a favorable exchange-rate move.
