Understand the economic and market influences on EUR/GBP, and why the exchange rate can react differently from a headline forecast.
The main drivers
The expected path of ECB policy relative to Bank of England policy is important. UK wages, inflation and budgets can move sterling; euro-area inflation, growth and political developments can move the euro. London and European business hours are relevant, but the option expiry cutoff must be checked independently of the economic calendar.
The surprise matters
A published number must be compared with what the market expected. A policy decision can move the currency through the outlook for future decisions, not simply through today’s rate change.
A move in EUR/GBP reflects both currencies. Compare the two economies and the reason for a rate change instead of assuming higher rates always strengthen a currency.
Connect the view to the option
The option strike, premium and time remaining determine how a forecast translates into a payoff. An expected event may already be reflected in the premium. A fall in implied volatility can offset a favorable exchange-rate move.
