The underlying is a futures contract

A currency futures option references a particular futures contract. A call gives a right to establish the long futures side at its strike; a put gives a right to establish the short side, subject to the exchange’s rules. The option’s expiry and the underlying futures delivery month are separate details and should both appear in your trade plan.

Listed contracts provide standardized terms and central clearing. They still carry market risk, bid–ask costs and potentially significant liquidity differences between expiries and strikes. Active trading in the currency itself does not guarantee an active market in every option.

Read these contract fields

  • Currency amount, quote units, tick value and premium convention.
  • The exact underlying futures month and option expiry time.
  • Exercise style, automatic-exercise rules and broker cutoffs.
  • What position exercise creates and when margin or delivery funding is required.
  • Trading hours, holiday schedules and the rules for closing a position.

Use the exchange’s FX product specifications for the selected contract. Product families can contain different expiry and exercise conventions; there is no safe single rule to infer from the words “FX option.”

Keep the chart and the trade aligned

Our pair charts show spot/reference FX context, not the futures settlement price. For a futures-option order, check the actual underlying futures quote. This is especially important for yen, Canadian-dollar and Swiss-franc contracts because their common futures quote direction differs from the spot pair shown in this section.

After exercise, a long-option position can become a margined futures position. Closeout and delivery planning therefore matter even for a buyer who initially paid the entire option premium. See the comparison guide and settlement risks.
